I am analyzing data from the adult dataset wave 1. The dervived cigarettes per day variable (R01R_A_PERDAY_EDY_CIGS) has a max of 400 (and there are several individuals who have this extreme valu). This means that these participants were smoking 20 packs. There are also several individuals who report values of 100+ cigarettes per day. There are 2 variables used to create R01R_A_PERDAY_EDY_CIGS. The first collects the number of cigarettes or packs per day. The second is the unit (cigarettes or pack). So for anyone who said packs, their number was mutipled by 20 to get cigarette per day and is their value for R01R_A_PERDAY_EDY_CIGS. This has to be a data error (either by the respondent not really paying attention or the data coded wrong?). Anyone else encounter this?
