Question about Flavor Categories

Hi, I had a quick question about the response categories for flavored products- I noticed that in questions where respondents are asked to select which flavors they've used "chocolate" is a separate answer choice from "candy, deserts, or other sweets"

I was just curious about the rationale for these being listed as separate answer choices and any important analytic considerations for assessing flavors!

thanks so much!!

RE: Question about Flavor Categories

Flavors can be assessed collectively or separately depending on the research questions when analyzing flavored use of tobacco products or comparing use of specific flavor categories. The RUF and PUF User Guides, codebooks, and annotated instruments are valuable resources that may help address this question, located at  https://www.icpsr.umich.edu/icpsrweb/NAHDAP/series/606

Follow-up question about flavorings

Hi Claire,

I'm trying to assess ENDS flavoring use patterns across the waves. Here are the questions I'm using:

  • Wave 1:
    • Is regular brand flavored to taste like menthol, mint, clove spice, candy, fruit, chocolate, alcohol (such as wine or cognac), or other sweets? (R01_AE1050)
  • Wave 2:
    • Is regular brand flavored to taste like menthol, mint, clove spice, candy, fruit, chocolate, alcohol (such as wine or cognac), or other sweets? (R02_AE1050)
    • Which flavor is it? Choose all that apply (R02_AE1012_01 - R02_AE1012_07)
  • Wave 3:
    • What flavor is your regular brand? Choose all that apply (R03_AV1012_01 - R03_AV1012_OS)

I'm trying to separated out any ENDS use that is non-flavored. There are a decent number of respondents who say their usual brand is not one of the listed flavors in waves 1 and 2 (n=617 in wave 1 and n=649 in wave 2). In wave 3, with the question change, there is not a single person who does not check at least one of the flavoring options or 'some other flavor, specify.' There is a PATH derived variable (R03R_AV1012_OS_01) for people who selected some other flavor and specified non-flavored (n=14). My questions are:

  • Was there a 'some other flavor, specify' option in waves 1-2 that I am missing? I suspect that people who said there regular brand was not one of the listed flavors should not be interpreted as 'non-flavored' but would like to explore that further.
  • In wave 3, is the R03R_AV1012_OS_01 variable the only way to assess non-flavored ENDS use?

Thanks in advance.
